Challenge
100% scanning of intricate aerospace engine rings
Results
The FOERSTER system has a flaw specification of 0.3 mm round bottom EDM, meeting the stringent requirements set by the engine OEM. It is highly effective in detecting cracks emanating from the edges of threaded bolt holes, through-holes, and hard-to-reach radius areas.

The Challenge
Testing intricate cylindrical aerospace engine rings presents numerous challenges. These rings possess multiple holes, grooves, and challenging radius areas that are difficult to access and analyze using eddy current (EC) methods. This testing is specifically tailored for the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) market as opposed to Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) applications.
The FOERSTER Solution
Our automated solution, capable of both robotic and manual load/unload processes, leverages STATOVISION technology to achieve a comprehensive 100% scan of intricate rings, including all holes, grooves, and radius features.
Results
The current system has a flaw specification of 0.3 mm round bottom EDM, meeting the stringent requirements set by the engine OEM. It is highly effective in detecting cracks emanating from the edges of threaded bolt holes, through-holes, and hard-to-reach radius areas. However, the scan time is relatively slow due to the utilization of 0.8mm high-frequency EC specially designed pencil probes. STATOVISION provides a detailed 2-dimensional image of the component, with all holes masked and defects precisely identified within each test zone.
